According to data from the Department of Crop Production (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), the provisionally average cost of the summer-autumn crop in 2021 in the Mekong Delta in particular and the Southern region in general is over VND3.7 thousand per kilogram of rice, an increase of VND143 per kilogram of rice (equivalent to VND143,000 per ton of rice) compared to the same period last year.

With such mentioned-above increased costs, the cost of summer-autumn rice production in the Mekong Delta in 2021 will increase by VND1.2 trillion over the same period. In the total cost of rice production, labor cost accounts for the highest with 28%; followed by fertilizer with 22%; pesticides with 16%; seed  with 9%; harvesting with 11%, tillage with  8% and the remaining 6% are other expenses. Currently, many rice farmers in the South are in the summer-autumn rice harvest in 2021. The price of rice sold in the field has been decreased by VND500 - 800 per kilogram compared to the same period every year due to the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic. The rising cost of rice production greatly affects the profitability of the farmers.
