Solutions to prevent blue-ear pig disease

After more than one month, blue-ear pig disease has broken out in 11 communes of 5 districts in the province. Currently, the risk of epidemic spreading is still high. If there is no urgent prevention and suppression from localities, there will be great damages.
According to Dong Nai Veterinary Bureau, until July 4th, 11 communes and towns of 5 districts: Vinh Cuu, Long Thanh and Nhon Trach, Cam My, Trang Bom confirmed the outbreaks of blue-ear pig disease. Among which, 3 communes and towns announced the disease: Hieu Liem, Vinh An town (Vinh Cuu District) and Binh An commune (Long Thanh district).
* Quick spread
Blue-ear pig disease appeared in Dong Nai in Vinh Cuu district in late May, 2012. Then, for nearly one month, Blue ear pig epidemic has continued to spread to 4 other districts in the province. So far, cattle of 242 households in 25 hamlets have been infected with the disease; the number of infected pig is 4.012, 1600 ones out of which have to be slaughtered. Mr. Phan Minh Bau, Deputy Director of Agriculture and Rural Development Department said: “Blue-ear pig disease has never spread quickly like this. For a short time, the disease broke out in four other districts and the risk of spreading throughout the province is very high. The province is concentrating to stamp out epidemics and prevent them from spreading further”.
Preventive vaccine repository of Dong Nai Veterinary Bureau
Currently, there are 20 communes in the alert zone of threat and surrounding areas are at high risk of blue-ear pig disease spreading. Weather in the province is at the height of the rainy season; this is favorable condition for the old epidemic in 2010 break out. According to initial estimates, the damage caused by blue-ear pig disease in the province is about 30 billion dong. Unless we stamp out quickly, the damage will continue to increase. Recently, blue-ear pig disease arises mostly in the old epidemic because of neglected farmers and poor sanitation; lack of compulsory vaccination as well as heavy rain, high humidity enable disease to develop.
* Urgent epidemic prevention
Mr. Hoang Son Hai, Chief of Dong Nai Veterinary Sub-Bureau said that: “The communes facing outbreaks of blue-ear pig disease are not allowed to dissect pigs and have to inject blue –ear pig vaccine at epidemics and other surrounding areas of high-threat and risk. After injecting vaccine, if pigs got slight disease, they will get well soon, as for pigs getting serious disease, they are going to die within 7days. The most effective blue-ear vaccine prevention is Chinese blue ear vaccine with JXA-1R strain". Recently, Vinh Cuu district carried out JXA1-R vaccination on sick, endangered pigs. The spread level has decreased; pigs are healthy and in good condition.
Pigs died of blue-ear pig disease
At the meeting with Steering Committee on Epidemic Prevention and Control of the district, Long Khanh county town and Bien Hoa city on July 4th, Tran Van Vinh - Vice Chairman stressed: "Pigs should be closely examined by the localities, treated immediately in case of signs of blue-ear pig disease to prevent spreading. Provincial veterinary sector has to focus on the province about vaccination and stamping out where the disease occurs. Raisers who have sick pigs have to slaughter with or without epidemic affirmation; the province will support the raisers with 38 thousand / kilogram".
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, 15 blue-ear vaccines are allowed to be used. However, the farmers in Dong Nai had better use Chinese blue ear JXA-1R strain vaccine to prevent the disease. Apart from blue-ear vaccine immunization, Provincial Steering Committee on Prevention and Control gave recommendation to raisers about mandatory immunization, such as fowl infections, cholera, and paratyphoid. Pigs must be taken care, fed well to improve the resistance and veterinary hygiene. Each week, raisers should use Benkocid, Chloramin B to sterilize cages 1-2 times. Breeding pigs should be isolated from 3 to 4 weeks after buying.
Symptoms of blue-ear disease
Infected sows and boars have some symptoms such as lacrimation, sneezing, runny nose, difficulty in breathing, paralyzing or unsteady gait. In addition, these pigs have 40-410C fever, rash redness in soft skin areas. After 4-5 days, the sores appear and become more serious. Blue-ear swine usually have high fever, dry nose, fatigue or lying, red skin rash, pale ear fringe. The farmers should separate infected pigs and report to communal Veterinary promptly to treat or prevent the spread of the disease.
