Tan Phu District proactively fights against drought in dry season

To cope with the drought that will come soon and last as expected by the Dong Nai Centre for Hydro - Meteorological Forecasting, Tan Phu district has proactively built solutions to overcome and ensure water resources for agricultural production.
The district has nearly 9 thousand hectares of annual crops, of which mainly rice. Along with the implementation of rotating irrigation in irrigation works, management, supervision and improvement of the canal system as well as monitoring changes in water levels, the district also proactively directs pumping stations to proactively support areas at risk of drought in order to promptly respond to and ensure sufficient water sources for fields.
Preparation of anti-drought plan
According to Dong Nai Centre for Hydro - Meteorological Forecasting, water shortage in Tan Phu district may occur in some locations due to less rainfall this year and higher annual average temperatures. Upon that basis, Tan Phu district conducted a survey and zoned 6 locations where drought may occur: Irrigation area of Nam Sao weir - Phu Binh commune (with an area of 210 hectares), Dong Hiep weir (800 hectares), irrigation area of pumping stations of hamlets 5A, 9, 10 and 11 of Dak Lua commune (420 hectares) and irrigation area of Vam Ho dam, Ta Lai commune (50 hectares). Up to now, only Nam Sao field needs watering support, the rest are still under control and water shortage has not happened.

However, the District People's Committee as well as Dong Nai Irrigationnal Works Exploitation Companly Limited still actively prepares specific solutions to be ready to cope, ensuring there is no water shortage. Accordingly, in addition to solutions for upgrading, dredging and renovating existing irrigation works, the said units also have plans to supply water to support the fields. In addition to increasing water pumping from Ben Thuyen pumping station to the operating Nam Sao field, other contingency support measures have also been formulated, such as: increasing the use of Da Ton lake water to irrigate about 50 hectares of La Oc area (Phu Binh commune); installation of 3 field pumps in the irrigation area of Dong Hiep weir, etc.
In addition to measures to ensure water resources against drought, Tan Phu district also actively propagates residents to change the structure of plants and animals. According to Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Tan Phu District, Mr. Nguyen Huu Ky, the district has directed localities to regularly propagate and mobilize farmers to grow rice in low-lying areas with convenient water supply. For the high-lying areas that are unable to control irrigation water and upland fields, they will switch to shallow crops such as corn, vegetables, beans, etc. According to Mr. Ky, in addition to the prepared contingency plans, district steering committee also directs localities and district specialized units to work closely with management units, exploit irrigation works in the area to ensure the best work of water regulation, serving production as planned.
Supplying water to fields
Nam Sao field (Phu Binh commune, Tan Phu district) is the place where drought occurred quite early. Right from the early days of February, drought has appeared, so the task of increasing watering and serving production has been paid more attention by farmers.
The Nam Sao field has an area of about 210 hectares and is annually supplied with water from Nam Sao weir, managed and operated Dong Nai Irrigationnal Works Exploitation Companly Limited. However, right from the beginning of this year, the dam area was inundated with water, the aforementioned enterprise actively dredged the water channel, used pumps to carry water from the canal system of Ben Thuyen Pump Station (managed by the District People's Committee) to serve irrigation for the field.
Pumps are pumping water to the drought-stricken fields
Mr. Tran Hoang Ha, in charge of Ben Thuyen pumping station, said that this year, the dry season came early, so the pump station has actively coordinated with Dong Nai Irrigationnal Works Exploitation Companly Limited to pump water 24/24 to serve about 160/210 hectares of winter-spring rice crop in Nam Sao's fields. Thus, with an additional 160 hectares, Ben Thuyen pumping station had to double its capacity (normally serving only 150 hectares of irrigation), the time is expected to last about 70-80 days until the end of the winter-spring crop (the end of March). To bring water to the fields, farmers used a pumping scheme to bring water to the Five Stars field (The pumping stations were set up in segments to guide water into small ditches, running along the fields, and from then on, farmers brought water into their fields).
Mr. Duong Quoc Tri, Head of Cooperative Group of Ben Thuyen Pump Station, who is also a farmer cultivating 5 hectares of rice in Nam Sao field, said that due to the need to pump water 24/24, people take turns to watch and visit the fields to ensure water for the rice fields. The Nam Sao field has been in drought condition since 2019, but in the first year, people did not have experience so the drought fighting was delayed. “This year, due to the early initiative, the winter-spring crop is guaranteed, not affected, we are very assured when the pumping station ensures the water source for production,” - Mr. Tri added.
