Having traveled to many places, doing many jobs, but Vo Thi Ngoc Bich's family (Hamlet 2, Song Ray commune) only really stable when attached to mulberry trees and silkworms. Not only stabilizing life, her family also established the Minh Hoa Silkworm Farming and became a place to supply mulberry trees, silkworm breeds and product underwrite for hundreds of households inside and outside the commune.

“When I came here, there were many silkworm breeders. However, the planting of mulberry and cocoons is entirely spontaneous. Silkworms are not homogeneous, their breeding methods are not following the process, so the productivity is not high” - - Ms. Ngoc Bich recalled.

With available experience, and seeing that there is no seed supply establishment in the area, Ngoc Bich decided to establish the first silkworm-rearing facility in Cam My district. She imported silkworm eggs to raise until the silkworms were old enough and resold them to others. In the early period, due to concerns about the origin and quality of seeds, very few customers came to Ngoc Bich's establishment. However, after a few effective cases, with “widespread fame”, the number of customers of her facility is increasing. There are households who have never raised silkworms, they also come to Ngoc Bich for advice and partner.

Currently, on average, Ngoc Bich's establishment consumes 1.6 thousand boxes of seedlings per month (each box earns about 60kg cocoons). Her establishment is also the place to provide high-yielding mulberry varieties to households inside and outside the district, and along with that, she also consumed output for more than 300 households with the average purchase output of 5-6 tons of cocoons/week. In addition, her facility also creates regular jobs for more than 20 workers with an income of 6-7 million VND/person.

Mr. Hoang Van Duc (Hamlet 2, Song Ray Commune) is also a “skillful breeder” with silkworms by the cocoon yield he collected always outperformed other farmers about 5kg cocoons/box.

His experience in raising silkworms is to raise silkworms on a sieve system rather than dropping them into the ground. To limit the disease, he installed a curtain around the house, installed additional fans and a misting system on the roof to control the temperature; Periodically after each silkworm harvest, he spread lime around the raising area for disinfection. In the process of rearing, it is required to detect potential silkworms and eliminate them early, avoiding infection. The leaves of the mulberry picked must be dried, before being fed to the silkworms to avoid infection.

Mr. Trinh Dinh Hoa, owner of the Minh Hoa Silkworm Farming, said that the technical care and seedlings with this production is extremely important. To become a partner to supply trees and seedlings to more than 300 households, Mr. Hoa said that in addition to providing healthy silkworms and mulberry varieties with high productivity, it is also necessary to regularly organize technical advice on planting and caring for people to get economic benefits. Besides, when the price of cocoon is below 100 thousand VND/kg, the establishment also supports farmers by sell on credit or deducting VND 80,000/box for breeders.

In order to “accompany” with farmers, Mr. Hoa directly linked with Minh Tuyet Bao Loc Silkworm Company Limited (a big silk enterprise in Lam Dong province) to undertake output for farmers. As a result, hundreds of households are comfortable with their production, sticking to their facility, thereby contributing to the prosperity of mulberry rearing.

Song Ray People's Committee Chairman Nguyen Van Hanh said that in recent years, sericulture and Silk production has been revived and flourished. In order to form a sericulture chain, the commune has established sericulture cooperative cooperatives in each hamlet, and is proposing the district to establish a general sericulture cooperative. The commune’s goal is to make this collective economic model a key one; mulberry farming and silkworm raising is the main occupation and silk is a typical product of Song Ray commune under the district’s “One Commune, One Product” program.

Cam My district currently has about 500 hectares of mulberry with over 400 planting households, of which 250 hectares and 300 households under planning have output links. Currently, Cam My district has established 5 cooperative groups to cultivate mulberry to raise silkworms, 4 points to supply materials and to consume outputs with prices ranging from 90-150 thousand VND/kg of silk. On average, each hectare of mulberry combined with silkworm raising, farmers earn a profit of VND 200-250 million per year.
