Dong Nai port system aimed for the higher level

In the current years, port services suppliers in Dong Nai have been focusing more on the investments. In 2015, Dong Nai Port Jsc. put a new wharf into use in Go Dau port (Nhon Trach) with the capacity for up to 30,000 tons cargo ship. Saigon New Port Company also completed and put into use Nhon Trach New Port Inland Container Depot (ICD), which is the third ICD in Dong Nai. Mr. Ngo Minh Thuan – Deputy General Director of Saigon Newport said, the transportations from Long Thanh, Nhon Trach to Cai Mep, Cat Lai, Hiep Phuoc ports in Ho Chi Minh City are costly and time consuming, thus, Saigon New Port decided to invest in Nhon Trach ICD for logistics, customs, unloaded containers services center, goods storage services.

As being planned, Dong Nai port system shall be the national general port, regional gateway; including the functional harbors in Long Binh Tan (Dong Nai River), Phu Huu Harbor (Dong Nai River and LongTau – Nha Be River), Ong Keo harbor (Long Tau River and Dong Tranh River), Go Dau Harbor and Phuoc An Harbor on Thi Vai River. In 2025, there shall be up to 44 harbors (comparing to the currently 15); including up to 33 harbors in Nhon Trach. The clearance capacity shall be up to about 20 – 21 million tons/year in 2020 and 51 – 58 million tons/year in 2030; meanwhile, the current capacity is over 11 million tons/year. Go Dau and Phuoc An shall be the main harbors with the capacity expected to increase significantly in the near future.

To be the supporter as well as the reacher of the seaport system, the ICD system shall also be well developed to meet the demand of procedures processing for clearance, good storing pending import and export. The current ICD in Dong Nai include Long Bing New Port ICD, Tin Nghia ICD, Nhon Trach New Port ICD shall continue being developed and invested. At the same time, the new Dong Nai ICD, Tan Van ICD, Trang Bom ICD and Song Thuong ICD in Phu Huu are being planned.

Port traffic shall soon be untangled and developed

According to experts’ evaluations, one of the most concerned issues in Dong Nai is the port traffic. While many core routes and highways have been invested strongly, port traffic routes are still having limitations. 15/44 planned ports are mainly operating within the areas, without traffic route, the loading operations encounter a lot of problem. Taking Nhon Trach as an example, there are many harbors in the area, yet the port traffic project have not been properly planned and invested. The project was planned to be 15km long, going through Dai Phuoc, Phu Huu, Phu Dong, Phuoc Khanh and Vinh Thanh communes and after finished, it shall become the inter – port traffic route and enhance the productivities of the 15 ports which have been invested following the Governmental approved sea port planning group 5.

Mr. Pham Anh Tuan – Deputy General Director of Portcoast Consultant Corporation said, the most currently urgent issue was the solution for port traffic investments. “Dong Nai has lots of potential and advantages to develop port system but the development are not as fast as expected. One of the problems is the lack of traffic routes to connect the port areas with the highways. Go Dau port system can connect with Highway No.51; however the route is too narrow for large container trucks. Ong Keo industrial zone is right next to Ong Keo port; but as long as the port is not properly developed, it is hard for the industrial zone to attract investments,” – said Mr. Tuan.

Mr. Do Hong Thai – Deputy General Director of Vietnam Maritime Administration said, Dong Nai ports are currently accounting for about 20% of South Eastern export and the loading procedures are mainly processed in Ho Chi Minh City. Dong Nai ports are mainly the transit spot between Ho Chi Minh City and Ba Ria – Vung Tau since large cargo ships cannot travel through Dong Nai port system.

 “The long term target of the South Eastern ports planning is to reduce the traffic in Ho Chi Minh City and increase it in Dong Nai and Ba Ria – Vung Tau. Thus, both surface and water transport infrastructure leading to the ports shall be maintained to facilitate and enhance the loading operations.” – said Mr. Thai.

Deputy Chairman of Provincial People’s Committee – Mr. Tran Van Vinh said, recently, Dong Nai has had lots of effort in upgrading port traffic routes, some river routes were also dredged to enable convenient transportation; however, there were still some limitations. Provincial Leaders confirmed that Dong Nai shall cooperate closely with Ministry of Transportation and Vietnam Maritime Administration in providing data and statistics required and relating planning to plan Dong Nai port system to be a highly practical system and put it to the higher level.
