Nhon Trach district has nearly 2 thousand hectares of water surface for aquaculture. In which, shrimp farming accounts for more than 90%. In order to develop large-scale aquaculture areas, Nhon Science and Technology to pilot a model of technology application in intensive shrimp farming according to the planning details of the centralized aquaculture area of Nhon Trach district Trach District is calling for investors, proposing to coordinate with the Department of in the period of 2017-2020 and orientations to 2030 were approved by the province in 2017.

Many years ago, Nhon Trach District was the largest aquaculture area in the province. Initially, the water surface area on the river, in the mangrove forest, later on a lot of rice land with low yield and salinity was transferred to aquaculture. During the peak period, the whole district had more than 2.2 thousand hectares of aquaculture area, mainly shrimp. However, because most of them are extensive shrimp farming (natural farming, no stocking, no feeding) and improved extensive (with additional seed), density, water sources and diseases cannot be controlled, so the area of abandoned ponds is increasing.
Head of Economic Department of Nhon Trach District – Mr.Nguyen Van Nhan said, aquaculture is the strength of the agriculture industry. However, due to sedural farming, low investment capital, epidemics and water pollution caused part of the area to decrease. Currently, the district has more than 1.9 thousand hectares of water surface suitable for aquaculture, of which the area for shrimp farming is 1,879 ha, the rest is for oysters, blood cockles and fish of all kinds. Compared with rice cultivation and forestry trees such as melaleuca, mangroves, especially whiteleg shrimp farming according to CP technology, it ensures environmental sanitation conditions in aquaculture areas, in line with the situation of increasing the salinity of water sources and can bring a profit of VND 3 billion/ha/year.
From a farmer with only a few rice poles growing 1 crop/year, Mr. Nguyen Huy Binh (Ba Truong hamlet, Phuoc An commune) has become the owner of a high-tech shrimp farm with more than 3 ha of ponds. In addition, he also raised joint capital on an area of 2 ha.
Mr. Binh said that Phuoc An commune people used to do 2 rice crops/year, later saltwater intrusion, many areas only cultivated 1 crop/year. Many people leave their fields deserted or turn to melaleuca plantations, but the economic efficiency is not high. He boldly renovated his fields to shrimp farming in the form of extensive farming, but lost money due to water pollution. Undeterred, he borrowed money to invest in pond bottom lining, bought seed, and bought food exclusively for shrimp. Profitable, he gradually developed the area and became the most effective intensive shrimp farming in the commune.

Encourage intensive shrimp farming model using CP technology
According to the Economic Department of Nhon Trach District, currently there are more than 1.5 thousand hectares of shrimp farming area in the form of improved extensive farming, the average yield of 3 tons/ha/crop, profit is about 120 million VND/ha/year. About 330ha of intensive shrimp farming area, in which, normal intensive productivity reaches 6 tons/ha/crop, profit is about 270 million VND; intensive whiteleg shrimp according to CP technology productivity reaches 60-80 tons/ha/crop, profit can reach 3 billion VND if 4 cases are carried out.
"Farming whiteleg shrimp according to CP technology helps farmers control the density, rate of seed loss, water quality, feed sources, waste, so the profit is high. The district continues to encourage the development of this model to solve the problem of economy, epidemics, environment"- the representative of the Economic Division of the district shared.
In 330ha of intensive shrimp farming area, there are about 100ha of intensive shrimp farming area according to CP technology in Vinh Thanh and Phuoc An communes. According to farmers, the limitation of this model is large investment capital. For submerged ponds, concrete banks must be built. Floating ponds must be made of iron frames to fix the pond on the ground. In addition, it is necessary to lay the bottom canvas, invest in the system of food paths, waste collection lines, oxygen generators running 24/24 continuous hours, generators.
Mr. Bach Cong Tai, Phuoc An commune said that by the end of 2020, he invested VND 1.4 billion to make 9 ponds both floating and submerged on an area of 2 hectares. In the first season, he released 700,000 seedlings, obtained about 16.5 tons of shrimp. At the time of harvesting shrimp sold at an average price of VND 160,000/kg, earning more than VND 2.6 billion. Subtracting the initial investment costs, food, medicines, public, he profits more than 100 million. Mr. Tai added that the company is supporting the cost of food and medicine to build a pilot model for people inside and outside the province to visit and learn from experience. "Raising technology shrimp has a large investment cost, in return the capital can be recovered in just one crop" - Mr. Tai said.
To support farmers in switching to an intensive shrimp farming model using CP technology, Nhon Trach district invests in roads, electric lines, and irrigation systems for aquaculture areas; establishing cooperative groups for shrimp farming in communes; development of VietGAP shrimp farming areas. Along with that, individuals and businesses are called on to invest in building technical infrastructure projects in shrimp farming areas, invest in developing sustainable aquaculture projects in the area. Coordinate with the Department of Science and Technology to build pilot models of high-tech shrimp farming in existing ponds in Phuoc An commune, then replicate the model to other farming areas.
Box: Shrimp farming model by CP technology is a model built, completed and transferred to farmers by C.P Vietnam Livestock Joint Stock Company.
