Establishing the dairy farming
Mr. Lam Quang Tri, who has contributed to the development of the dairy industry in Long Thanh district, is sharing the process of traditional manual milk processing.
The dairy farming has been in Long Thanh district since the 80s of last century. However, at that time, only a few households raised themselves on a small scale, so Long Thanh cow's milk product was not known to the local people. It is the farmers who have gradually developed the herd of cows, created a breeding farm and sought to bring products to consumers. Seeing that cows reproduce well and the source of milk is abundant, Mr. Tri thought of raising the cows. He bred his two beef cows to cross with the dairy cows in Ho Chi Minh City for breeding.
Among the first dairy farmers in Long Thanh, Mr. Lam Quang Tri (Binh Lam hamlet, Loc An commune), originally a physician, is considered a pioneer in dairy development in Long Thanh district. Mr. Tri is originally from Ho Chi Minh City. In the late 70s of last century, he returned to Long Thanh district and worked as a physician at the commune health station. To earn more income, he raised pigs and chickens and later turned to beef cattle. Around 1985, he switched to full dairy farming. During the peak period, Tri's family raised nearly 200 dairy cows and became the largest private dairy farmer in the province.
From raising cows, Mr. Tri learned how to process milk, made consigment around Long Thanh market area. At the beginning, the consumption of dairy products was not favorable, Mr. Tri gave milk to the elderly and small children in the hamlet and asked them for suggestions. Later, after a large number of customers, Mr. Tri invested in milking machines, filtering and pasteurizing equipment; At the same time, he opened a selling point for milk on Highway 51 with the name of Nam Tri cow milk.
At present, Nam Tri dairy farm has more than 70 cows in milking period, about 30 cows are terminal sires. He has developed 5 points of selling milk and dairy products, making consigment to about 30 points of sale inside and outside the district, creating jobs for 15 employees with an average income of 5 million VND/month. In addition, his farm also receives product underwriting for 3 dairy households in the commune with the number of more than 30 cows. On average, his facility consumes about 600-700 liters of raw milk per day to make pasteurized fresh milk, yogurt, and flan (a popular cake made from chicken eggs and fresh milk). Profit from the farm, the selling point is about VND 600 million/year.
Learning from Mr. Tri's household, at present, some dairy farmers in Long Thanh district also open selling fresh milk and milk products to locals and tourists.

In fact, Long Thanh cow's milk was only really known by a large number of consumers when Lothamilk Joint Stock Company (formerly Dong Nai Dairy Cow Joint Venture Company) was established, cooperating with livestock farmers, developing farms and setting up milk processing factories and retail outlets locally.
Ms. Chu Hai Yen, Deputy General Director of Lothamilk Joint Stock Company, said that Long Thanh cow milk has been occupying the leading position in the field of supplying whole fresh milk in the South and South Central markets. Currently, each month, the company provides the market with more than 1.5 thousand tons of milk products of all kinds.
To achieve this success, right from its inception, the company has cooperated with households, farms, developed cow herds according to the size and standards of the company. In addition to investing in dairy farms in Dong Nai, the company also actively built material areas in Cu Chi (Ho Chi Minh City), Long An, Soc Trang, Lam Dong, etc., and formed purchasing stations, censored input quality in material areas.
In 2018, Lothamilk officially put into operation phase 1 of a milk processing factory based on European technology with an investment of more than VND 500 billion in Tam Phuoc Ward (Bien Hoa City). The factory develops nearly 10 product lines: pasteurized fresh milk sweetened and non-sweetened, pasteurized drinking yogurt, pasteurized fresh milk, milk rice paper, pancake (phen la in Vietnamese), milk candy, milk powder, corn milk and brown rice milk, etc. Product quality is increasingly upgraded to international standards but still meeting the criteria of delicious, nutritious and convenient for users. Currently, the company develops many different consumption channels such as supermarkets, convenience stores, and department stores. Up to now, Lothamilk has built more than 10 rest-stops, connected to nearly 20 supermarket systems, more than 50 distributors and more than 500 retail points across the country.
“In the near future, Lothamilk will complete phase 2 of the milk processing factory and increase its operating capacity to 90 thousand tons/year. At the same time, we will also continuously research to launch new and suitable product lines; Develop the system of distribution channels. Our goal in the next few years is to bring Long Thanh cow's milk into the top 5 companies of pure fresh cow's milk, the leading products related to cow's milk in Vietnam market and proceed to export milk abroad.”- Mrs. Yen shared.
