In 2007, besides brown planthopper, Rice yellow dwarf across rice fields, farmers also suffered from severe losses from foot and mouth disease on cattle.

Despite difficulties in farming production, sectors and localities across the province instructed farmers to change crops and animals to be suitable to natural conditions and controlled water supply for two crops of winter-spring and summer-autumn. They also gave instructions to farmers on how to apply solutions to control plant diseases and prevent the foot and mouth disease and bird flu from reoccurring as well as control forest fires in the dry season 2006-2007. Therefore, production value of farming in 2007 increased compared to the same period.

However, when implementing its tasks, the agriculture sector experienced quite lot difficulties.

Coordination between sectors and localities were not closely and synchronous. Farmers were not brave enough to change from rice to corn and other crops as instructed by the sector. 61 out of 100 works did not have interior field ditch system so watering was limited. Sense of responsibility for protection of irrigation works, economical water use and irrigation-fee contribution were not popularized widely and deeply.

From achivements and existing shortcomings, the agriculture sector, in 2008, strives for the target set by the Party’s Committee and People’s Committee, increasing production value of farming, forestry and fishery by 5.5 percent against 2007

To achive the objectives, Dong Nai agriculture sector has worked out some certain solutions as follows :

Concerning farming, the sector aims at centralized production areas associated with processing and consumption market; focuses on intensive farming and controlling brown planthopper, Rice yellow dwarf disease in order to boost productivity and improve quantities. Crop structure continues to be changed in the direction of commodity production; applications of technology and agricultural advances are transferred to production; farmers will be instructed to use new seeds, use biotechnology and processing technology to provide products good enough to compete in WTO market.

Big breeding farms are encouraged

Concerning breeding, the sector instructs localities on the planning of an area which encourages the breeding models and on how to use industrial food and equip breeding facilities with cooling system and waste treatment system etc; well control bird flu, foot and mouth disease, PRRS in pigs; popularize veterinary ordinance and expand veterinery services; intesify state management in veterinary medicine, cattle-feed etc

Concerning aqua-culture, the sector focuses on exploiting irrigation works, ponds, fields for intensive aquaculture; completing regulations on management of Tri An Lake; strictly dealing with violations of marine-product exploitation, improving the the specialization of collaborator system.

Oxes – key cattle of the province

Conceringg forestry, the sector strenghthen forest management and protection, strictly dealing with violations, continue the program to supplement forest with big trees and the program to grow trees in offices, schools and households; direct the concerned agencies to deploy solutions for forest fire control; complete the classification planning of forests and forestry land on maps and afield and total up land available for forestation to supplement the plan for afforestation in 2008-2010 period.

Concerning irrigation, the sector announces the watering capability of irrigation works; coordinate with localities owning barrages and lakes to control water use so as to be suitable to area; transfer irrigations works for localities to directly manage them; well control natural disasters; timely cope with bad weather situations; speed up the program to solidify the internal field ditches etc
