A new approach for quail farming

Trang Bom district is the largest quail farming locality in the province with more than 160 farms and households raising more than 2.2 million quails. According to the policy of the district, many households have shifted to other jobs, reduced the size of the flocks or moved their farms away from crowded residential areas, at the same time, ensured conditions for disease prevention, and environment, food safety and hygiene to limit risks and increase economic efficiency.

Becoming well-off thanks to quail farming
Prior to 2015, quail farming in Trang Bom district developed vigorously. With the advantage of low investment capital, small required area, fast capital recovery time and relatively favorable output, hundreds of households in communes Quang Tien, Ho Nai 3, An Vien, Trung Hoa, Dong Hoa, and Trang Bom Town invested in the farms, escaped poverty and became better off thanks to quail farming. During the peak period, the district had more than 6 million quail birds. In which, the majority did the farming in family scale from a few thousand to more than 100 thousand individuals.
Later, many quail farms were forced to close due to falling prices and outbreaks of flu. However, many farmers still persevere and have become successful in the farming.
Mrs. Bui Thi Thu (Hamlet 6, An Vien Commune) said that more than 10 years before, she and several people contributed to the establishment of a quail farm with the number of 5,000 individuals. Two years later, she split up to do her own business, raising quail for both meat and eggs. In the period 2015-2017, whereas many households had to abandon or suspend their farming, she still increased the flocks steadily. Currently, Thu maintains a flock of 100 thousand quails. After deducting monthly labor and bran costs, her family earn around VND 100 million as profit.
“Quail farming is less risky than that of other livestock. It just takes me about 3 weeks from breeding quails to collecting their eggs; collecting time can last 8 months, up to more than 1 year depending on quality of flocks and food. Besides collecting eggs daily, every other day, we collect their feces to sell to organic fertilizer establishments or households growing fruit trees and rubber trees. When the birds get older, liquidation value is also quite good, equal to or higher than when breeding", advised Thu.
Tran Huu Nghia (Hamlet 5, An Vien Commune), who has been raising quail for more than 20 years, said that quail does not bring as high income as chickens and pigs, but provides a regular daily income, it is easy to care for and generates stable outcomes. “Thanks to quail farming, I have managed to build 2 houses, one for myself and one for my children. As a person from the other place, without house and cultivable land, but being capable of building a house is a huge happiness for me!", said Nghia.

According to the Economic Department of Trang Bom District, poultry farming (mainly quails and chickens) is still the local agricultural strength. In recent years, according to the advocacy of the authorities, many households raising quail have switched to other businesses, reduced the size of flocks or moved away from crowded residential areas.
Currently, the district has more than 160 households and quail farms with a total herd of more than 2.6 million individuals. The communes of Tay Hoa, Trung Hoa, Doi 61 and Binh Minh still have relatively many farms. All farms and livestock households comply with disease prevention for livestock and apply a scientific and closed breeding model to reduce labor and risks, and meet environmental protection requirements.
Mr. Truong Quoc Chi, Chairman of the Farmers Association of An Vien Commune, said that large-scale quail farms, which grasps farming techniques, still generate good profits. In order to maintain and continuously develop herds, all the farms perform disease prevention and regular cleaning, and install nets for anti-dust and anti-odor purposes. Many farms also establish automatic feeding and drinking systems to reduce labor, and give quail music every day to maintain egg ratios. Farmers with smaller scales take advantage of quail manure for industrial crops to increase profits.
Tran Van Khanh (Loc Hoa Hamlet, Tay Hoa Commune) said that his family has been raising quail for nearly 15 years. In the process of raising, he often washes the nets and cleans manure to keep the cages clean. Quail food must be sufficient in weight and nutrients, and drinking water must be clean. “Previously, we had not mastered the process of dragging and releasing canvas when the weather changed, so there was a wave of quail deaths. Later, as I established in a closed farm, the situation did not happen anymore. The rate of quail eggs is always over 70/100 individual. Under this rate, I liquidate the flock immediately so as not to lose money", said Mr Khanh.
Quail farmers advise that, clean cages and regular spraying of disinfectants and adequate nutrition are important factors for healthy development and long-lasting laying period. Currently, the output of quail products is quite favorable. Traders collect goods regularly right in the farms. If it is maintained at 27 thousand VND/ 100 eggs, 50 thousand VND/ kg of meat, 40 thousand VND/ kg for liquidation, the farmers will be profitable.
