Vietnam’s most modern power plant built in Dong Nai province

​(News Portal – Dong Nai) - Nhon Trach 3 and Nhon Trach 4 Power Plant Projects (Nhon Trach 3 and 4 Power Plant projects) in Phuoc Khanh commune, Nhon Trach district are the first projects using LNG fuel in Vietnam. This is also the project with the world's top generator capacity and gas turbine efficiency.

The units will begin generating electricity for commercial purpose in the fourth and second quarters of 2024 and 2025 respectively. Not only does it contribute to realizing the commitment to net zero emissions by 2050, the project also helps supplement power sources and ensure the integrity of the national energy system.​

The most modern thermal power plant in Vietnam 

According to Petrovietnam Power Corporation (PV Power), Nhon Trach 3 and Nhon Trach 4 Power Plants are national key projects with many leading indicators in Vietnam today. 

This is the first and most modern thermal power plant using imported LNG fuel in Vietnam at this time. The project uses the first 1:1:1 configuration (turbine - boiler - generator) in the country. It is one of the few gas turbine units with the largest capacity (over 500MW) as well as gas efficiency (over 60%) in the world.

In addition to the above factors, the investor and project management board have focused maximum effort to shorten the time to evaluate bids for the EPC package (design - procurement - construction - installation - test run and evaluation) of the Nhon Trach 3 and Nhon Trach 4 Power Plants project in the form of international public bidding in 2021.

Regarding capital sources, although it is a "huge" project with a total investment of 1,4 billion USD, the investor arranged the capital himself without the Government's guarantee. Specifically, the project was funded from the enterprise's equity capital accounting for 25% and other domestic and foreign loans accounting for 75%.

The operation of these projects will contribute to promoting clean energy transition in Vietnam and realizing the commitment to zero emissions by 2050. In addition, the project has great significance in ensuring national energy security as they can provide about 9 billion kWh/year to the existing power grid.

For Dong Nai province, the project will help increase the rate of clean energy for the province, increase tax revenue by thousands of billions of VND each year, and create jobs for many workers during the construction and operation periods.

General Director of PV Power Le Nhu Linh assesses that the projects will open a new chapter in the formation and development of the LNG project chain in Vietnam. This is a project that will establish PV Power's position as well as the Vietnamese energy industry. Therefore, the company always closely supports contractors to overcome challenges in order to bring the project into commercial operation according to plan, contributing to realizing the above goals, as well as to the development of clean electricity.

Nhon Trach 3 and 4 are the national clean power development projects. The project's EPC contract was implemented from mid-May 2022, with an implementation period of 30 months for Nhon Trach 3 Plant and 36 months for the other.

During the inspection on October 18, 2023, Vice Chairman of the Committee for Management of State Capital at Enterprises Ho Sy Hung said that the progress, quality of the project, and the management capacity of the investor and developer so far was quite remarkable. He also reminded involved parties to ensure the projects were on schedule and completed as soon as possible. Regarding issues of land, pilot operation, connection proposed by the investor, the Committee for Management of State Capital at Enterprises will consult with the parties according to its authority to find a solution.

The Nhon Trach 3 and 4 are important national projects, under the adjusted Power Plan VII, assigned by the Government to PV Power as the investor. The project has a capacity of 1,500 MW and a total investment of 1,4 billion USD. It is expected that Nhon Trach 3 Plant will generate electricity for commercial use in November 2024 and Nhon Trach 4 Plant will soon begin to do so in May 2025. ​
