Supporting Farmers in Economic Development and Product Distribution

​(News Portal – Dong Nai) - The Southeast region is a key industrial hub and economic driver for the country, but it also boasts robust rural and agricultural economic development. Agricultural goods, including fresh produce and processed products, from this region are exported to many countries worldwide, showcasing the unique characteristics of local specialties. ​

Provincial leaders and the Central Committee of the Vietnam Farmers' Union visit a farmer's product booth at the Farmers' Union Conference in Bien Hoa City. 

To encourage farmers to develop economically, innovate, and replicate advanced models, local Farmers' Unions in the region have actively implemented connection and support programs.

Connecting Farmers with Investment Opportunities

Mr. Nguyen Tuan Anh, Chairman of the Provincial Farmers' Union, stated that the organization has been promoting the movement "Farmers compete in production, business excellence, solidarity for wealth creation, and sustainable poverty reduction." In 2024, nearly 46,300 households were recognized as outstanding farmers in production and business at various levels. Union members also supported 348 underprivileged households with 4,500 workdays, materials (seeds, livestock), and food supplies to stabilize their lives.

In 2024, the province's Farmers' Support Fund received an additional 10 billion VND from the state budget. To date, the total outstanding loans from the fund have reached over 173 billion VND, financing 321 farmer-led projects across the province.

In Binh Duong, Mr. Do Ngoc Huy, Chairman of the Provincial Farmers' Union, highlighted achievements such as implementing a "6-party collaboration program" to create value chains that enhance the value of agricultural products during the 2024-2028 period. The province also signed cooperative agreements with other localities, including Hanoi, Binh Phuoc, Lao Cai, and Tien Giang, to exchange development experiences and work with commercial banks to provide financial support for farmers.

Similarly, in Ba Ria – Vung Tau, the Farmers' Union supported the development of 16 production models tied to product consumption and five models focused on value chain production in 2024. The province also assisted members in forming cooperatives and partnerships to engage in value chain-based production and business. Furthermore, efforts were made to help members build agricultural brands, register geographical indications, establish planting area codes, packaging facility codes, and ensure traceability and food safety compliance.

The Need for Change

Given the unique socio-economic settings of each locality, farmer support programs have varied in activities and outcomes. However, a common challenge remains: the market for agricultural products is still unstable, affecting farmers' income and the ability to expand production. Efforts to promote collective economic models in rural agriculture and guide structural shifts in crops and livestock to create high-value, competitive products have been slow. These issues highlight the urgent need for change.

In Ho Chi Minh City, a notable achievement last year was the launch of the city's OCOP (One Commune, One Product) Club in Binh Chanh District with 24 members. The city also organized study tours to several countries and localities nationwide to inspire exemplary farmers to expand their production and replicate successful business models.

Mr. Nguyen Tuan Anh, Chairman of the Dong Nai Farmers' Union, emphasized the importance of promoting interaction and experience-sharing among provinces and cities. He proposed collaborative programs for advertising and distributing agricultural products, organizing social welfare activities, and coordinating efforts within the Union's movement. Additionally, introducing digital platforms, such as the "Vietnamese Farmers App," would enable farmers to access information, understand policies and programs, and connect and share experiences more easily.

The Permanent Vice Chairman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Farmers' Union affirmed the need for innovation in supporting farmers. Currently, the Party and the State are pushing for regional and intra-regional linkages. Farmers' Unions in provinces and cities must identify their strengths and specific areas for collaboration. They should enhance interactions and share experiences through cooperative agreements, particularly in promoting and consuming agricultural products and organizing social welfare activities across localities. ​
