Accelerating the progress of completing traffic routes connecting Long Thanh airport

​(News Portal – Dong Nai) - To make the most out of Long Thanh International Airport phase 1, traffic routes connecting to this airport need to be completed as soon as possible. ​

Construction of route T1 connecting Long Thanh airport phase 1 

Long Thanh airport will be operable in 2026
At the end of August, 2 bidding packages for construction and installation of passenger terminal equipment as well as runway and apron works of Long Thanh airport project phase 1 were started. These are the most important bidding packages and greatly affect the progress of the entire project in general.

In particular, Long Thanh airport phase 1's passenger terminal is considered the overall progress bar of the entire project. Mr. Lai Xuan Thanh, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV), the project investor, said that for the passenger terminal section, the construction contractor consortium estimated the construction would last for 39 months. This is the “progress bar" of the entire project, so ACV will make adjustments to the overall progress of the entire project to ensure Long Thanh airport phase 1 will be put into operation by the end of 2026.

As for the above items, ACV also started constructing 2 roads connecting Long Thanh airport phase 1 (route T1 and T2). These are traffic routes that will ensure the connection of Long Thanh airport phase 1 with the local traffic. At the same time, route T1 will also become a route to serve the construction process of works under the Long Thanh airport project.

In addition to the items in the component projects 3, the items in the component projects 1,2, 4 and Long Thanh airport project phase 1 is also being constructed to ensure the project will be completed and put into operation at the same time. In particular, in project component 2, the air traffic control tower is also currently under construction.

Priority should be given to connecting traffic
As planned, when Long Thanh airport phase 1 is put into operation, there will be 5 expressways serving traffic connections including: Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay; Phan Thiet - Dau Giay; Ben Luc - Long Thanh; Bien Hoa - Vung Tau and Dau Giay - Lien Khuong, all of which will play important roles.

Currently, the construction of Phan Thiet - Dau Giay expressway project has just completed and it has been put into operation. Meanwhile, the project to expand the Ho Chi Minh City - Long Thanh - Dau Giay expressway has not yet been implemented.

Mr. Vu The Phiet, General Director of ACV, said that it was forecast that when the Long Thanh airport project was completed, about 80% of international passenger traffic going to and from the airport would want to go to Ho Chi Minh City and vice versa. Therefore, completing the traffic routes connecting Long Thanh airport with Ho Chi Minh City was an urgent matter, especially at the time when traffic routes connecting the airport to Ho Chi Minh City were seriously overloaded.

Currently, based on the proposal of the Vietnam Expressway Corporation (VEC) and opinions of the Committee for Management of State Capital at Enterprises, the Ministry of Transport has reported to the Prime Minister for consideration, and assigning VEC to research and take steps to prepare for investment in expanding this route. Because the section from An Phu intersection to Beltway 2 intersection has been handed over to Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee for management, operation and maintenance, VEC only focuses on researching the expansion of the section from Beltway 2 to the intersection with Bien Hoa - Vung Tau highway.

The route will have from 8 to 10 lanes, as VEC mobilizes capital to invest in expansion, operation, exploitation and toll collection to return investment capital. Currently, this option is still being studied by the authorities.

As for the remaining projects, there are currently two expressways, Ben Luc - Long Thanh and Bien Hoa - Vung Tau phase 1, under construction. It is expected that these two expressways will be completed in 2025 and 2026.

In addition to the expressways, to serve the Long Thanh airport's future traffic connections, there will be 2 railway lines including Thu Thiem light railway - Long Thanh airport and Bien Hoa - Vung Tau railway. However, up to this point, both of these projects have not yet been able to complete investment procedures. ​
