Reporting on the results of the development of pig farming in the province, Vice Chairman of the provincial People's Committee Vo Van Chanh affirmed that Dong Nai strengthened the re-herd and developed it but only reached more than 80% of the total herd compared to that of pre-African swine fever. While encouraging the re-herd, the province also strictly controls the practice, only permitting re-establishment when the conditions for disease safety are met.
The re-herd is currently facing a number of difficulties because the total breeding stock is severely damaged, farmers, especially small-scale breeding households, who are in numerous difficulty in the source of breeding pigs as the current price of breeding pigs is at high. The provincial leaders said that they would mobilize enterprises, especially FDI enterprises, to develop the breeding herd for the source of breeds to supply to the farmers; cooperate with farmers to provide seeds and techniques to ensure safe re-breeding. The province will apply policies to support businesses and farmers in re-herd, especially the development of breeding pigs.
According to a report of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the total number of pigs in Dong Nai is over 2.03 million, down by 19.4% compared to that of pre-African swine fever. Up to now, except Bien Hoa City with a plan to relocate livestock from urban areas, 10/11 localities of Dong Nai have re-herd with 328 re-establishment facility, increasing about 14% compared to that of January, 2020, of which, the number of establishments affected by African swine cholera outbreak is 247, while the number of establishments not affected by the outbreak but suspending re-herd is 81.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Phung Duc Tien highly appreciated Dong Nai's achievements in the re-herd, especially in the recovery of breeding pigs. Through summarizing the prevention of African swine fever, there are many effective models and many businesses do very well; it is suggested that the province replicate the practice. Dong Nai has a great resource of sows, it is necessary to continue strengthening the re-herd, especially restoring the source of breeding pigs to farmers. The province also needs to pay attention to building safe livestock product chains, having mechanisms to support farmers to re-herd and develop pig herds in accordance with local production conditions.
