Completion of Power Supply for Long Thanh Airport This November

(News Portal – Dong Nai) - The Long Thanh International Airport project is currently under construction. Not only is it "a step ahead" in serving the construction activities, but the power supply for the airport's future operations is also ready.

This is one of the conditions contributing to the timely operation of Long Thanh Airport.

Leaders from Southern Power Corporation and Dong Nai Power Company inspect the project's progress.

Supplying Over 20,000 kWh/Day for Airport Construction

Long Thanh Airport is considered Vietnam's mega airport, with a scale of up to 5,000 hectares, total investment of over 16 billion USD, capacity of approximately 100 million passengers per year, and 5 million tons of cargo annually. The project is expected by the National Assembly, Government, ministries, and localities in the Southeast region to create breakthrough opportunities for economic development and generate jobs for tens of thousands of workers in the surrounding areas.

Recognizing the significance and importance of the project, Dong Nai Province has been preparing conditions for the project to commence and proceed with construction as planned. Specifically regarding electricity, the province has repeatedly worked with the Southern Power Corporation and Dong Nai Power Company (PC Dong Nai) to propose various plans to ensure sufficient power supply for construction activities as well as for the airport's future operations. The power supply project for Long Thanh Airport has a capacity of 80 MVA and a total investment of 119 billion VND, implemented by Dong Nai Electricity. According to the plan, the first phase of power supply is set to be operational in November 2024, with the second phase expected to be completed in the third quarter of 2025.

Mr. Truong Dinh Quoc, Director of PC Dong Nai, stated that as soon as the Long Thanh Airport Project commenced, Long Thanh Power would (under PC Dong Nai) collaborate with the airport's management to assess the electricity demand for each phase. They also conducted inspections and reviews of the entire 22kV power line supplying electricity to Long Thanh Airport to plan for upgrades and repairs. Thanks to these proactive measures, the electricity supply for the construction activities has remained stable and continuous.

Currently, there are two power sources serving the airport's construction: the primary source from the 110kV Binh Son Station (Long Thanh District) and a backup source from the 110kV Cam My Station. The power lines from these two stations are interconnected to facilitate power transfer as needed. The average electricity supplied to the airport is over 20,000 kWh per day.

According to Long Thanh Power, during the operation of the power grid for the airport area, the unit regularly maintains and services the equipment, checking temperatures and applying reflective tape on power poles to prevent accidents caused by construction vehicles. Additionally, Long Thanh Power has developed contingency plans, such as power transfer in case of outages, to ensure continuous electricity supply. This is one of the conditions that will help the project stay on schedule.

Accelerating the 110kV Substation and Connection Line Project

Two Months Earlier Than Scheduled

According to the plan, Long Thanh Airport is expected to become operational in 2026. Currently, the construction of the airport and other supporting infrastructures, including access roads, electricity, and water, is being carried out simultaneously.

Regarding the power supply for the airport, in June 2024, PC Dong Nai commenced the 110kV substation and connection line project. The project is divided into two phases, with the first phase involving the investment in a 40 MVA transformer and the connection line, scheduled for completion in January 2025. However, the project has been expedited to be operational by this November.

Mr. Nguyen Phuoc Duc, General Director of the Southern Power Corporation, shared that the corporation has directed electricity companies to ensure power supply for the socio-economic development of their respective areas. Specifically, for the power supply project for Long Thanh Airport, the corporation has instructed PC Dong Nai to develop a plan and coordinate with local authorities during the construction process, contributing to the timely operation of Long Thanh Airport.

Mr. Duc also noted that in Dong Nai and other southern provinces, many key projects are currently underway or about to be implemented. To ensure electricity supply, the corporation has required electricity companies to closely cooperate with localities to expedite land clearance, monitor, and urge project implementation to meet deadlines and ensure quality.
