Developing Green Spaces for Bien Hoa City

(News Portal – Dong Nai) - Bien Hoa City is currently formulating a comprehensive adjustment plan for its overall urban planning until 2045. One of the specific goals of this plan is to develop Bien Hoa City in a green and sustainable direction.

Bien Hung Park has become a green space in the central region of Bien Hoa City.

Establishing Urban Green Spaces

Bien Hoa City serves as the central urban area of the province. At the end of 2015, the Prime Minister officially recognized Bien Hoa City as a Class 01 urban area. However, nearly a decade after this recognition, Bien Hoa City still has not met several criteria required for Class 01 urban areas, including those related to parks and green spaces. This has resulted in Bien Hoa being one of the cities severely lacking urban green space.

Among the criteria that are still lacking and need improvement, two relate to green development: public green land per capita in the inner city and urban area. Specifically, the standard requires that the area of public green land in the inner city and urban area should reach 5-6 square meters per person. However, Bien Hoa City currently only achieves 0.91 square meters per person. Additionally, the city also does not have any green buildings, while it needs at least 1-2 green projects to meet this criterion.

Moreover, the criterion for total urban green land per capita has also not reached the maximum score according to the standards. Given these realities, one of the goals set during the formulation of the comprehensive adjustment plan for Bien Hoa City until 2045 is to increase green spaces. This aims to create a green urban space that focuses on developing a high-quality living environment and an attractive working environment; preserving and protecting the ecological environment and the characteristic cultural and historical identity; and ensuring the national and regional defense and security requirements.

Bien Hoa City Party Secretary Ho Van Nam stated that the comprehensive adjustment of the city's overall planning is the foundation for the synchronous, harmonious, and sustainable development of the urban area in the coming years. The planning not only organizes urban space but also serves as a key to addressing issues related to traffic, population, environment, and economy, helping Bien Hoa fully meet the standards of a Class 01 urban area. This will significantly contribute to the city's development in a smart, green, and sustainable direction.

Architect Phan Dang Son, Chairman of the Vietnam Association of Architects, noted that the plan to create urban green landscapes in the draft comprehensive adjustment of Bien Hoa City's overall planning until 2045 focuses on establishing green spaces along the Dong Nai River, Cai River, and San Mau Stream, which is reasonable within the overall development scenario. However, this needs to be represented more clearly in the drawings for concrete implementation.

"Greening" the Infrastructure

One of the biggest limitations of Bien Hoa City today is its infrastructure, including road networks and drainage systems, which are overloaded compared to demand. Therefore, a major goal for Bien Hoa City is to invest in building a synchronous, green, and smart technical infrastructure system to contribute to creating a green urban space.

The green drainage system will utilize green technologies such as rainwater reservoirs, rain gardens, and natural water filtration systems to reduce flooding risks and improve water quality. Additionally, efforts will be made to recycle and reuse water; designs will include systems for collecting and reusing rainwater and treated wastewater for purposes such as irrigation, car washing, or cooling.
